Reading Strategies Used in Math

Math Geek Mama is a resource blog created by a fellow math teacher whose uploaded many strategies, tips, games, and etc. that would help other math teachers in the classroom. Bethany, the creator of this website, included many useful resources for all grade levels (k-12) and tried to make the website very user friendly, so it is very easy to navigate around the website. In particular, I linked to the page where she talks about literacy strategies that can be used to teach math and I feel like this connects to what we have been talking about in class, such as trying to make connections with the real world or using prior knowledge/schema when introducing math concepts. So, I thought this is a nice resource that gives ideas and explains strategies that can be applied in the future when teaching students.

    Jane,
    I loved the blog you posted. The fact that she was not writing with the intent to change peoples opinions on how to teach math was refreshing. Math is so much more than just numbers and learning how to solve the problem and this article explains that. There is such a lack of understanding when it comes to that fact. The step by step ideas on how to incorporate teaching literacy in math is such an incredible tool provided. Thank you for sharing!

    Hey Jane!! I love that you chose this article and I really enjoy how the Math Geek Mama wants students to understand math conceptually versus just memorizing formulas and how to apply them. I like how one of her strategies includes making connections because there's always the one student that asks "when are we ever going to use this in real life?" and being able to tell them how they'll eventually have to apply their learning makes it so much more valuable.

Emily Calandrelli defines being STEM literacy as a "way of thinking" instead of being extremely scientifically smart. For example, going to the grocery store and knowing what are GMO's or what benefits organic products have are all STEM literacy. I personally like how she suggests  that STEM literacy is a survival skill and that its important to pay attention because it affects our society and how the world is effected based on it. I think as future educators, particularly in the STEM subjects, its important to keep in mind the importance of STEM literacy and guide students in the directions of understanding STEM literacy and why it is needed in our society. FInal Synthesis: Importance of Literacy

Going into this course, literacy was always something I expected was the responsibility of an ELA teacher. As a potential math teacher, I never thought of implementing literacy into the classroom and disregarded the importance of it. I always just thought of numbers and teaching numbers, so to be honest, I assumed this class would be somewhat pointless. However, as we went along in the course and learned the different strategies and concepts, my opinion about literacy changed and I actually think it’s extremely important for all teachers, no matter what content area the instructor is teaching, to implement literacy strategies in the classrooms. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone because the literacy strategies that we learned in the course is beneficial to both the content and enhancing reading skills. So, why not try?
