Teaching Students to Follow Directions

Resource: "Following Directions: How do I Teach this Skill?" https://learningspecialistmaterials.blogspot.com/2011/02/following-directions-how-do-i-teach.html For this week resource blog, instead of particularly focusing literacy in a specific content course and how we can implement things in our class to improve student's literacy skills in learning, I wanted to really focus on just following directions. In any subject and any task, following directions is an important skill student need to learn and I've been noticing while tutoring and/or in classes at Hilsman Middle there are a lot of students who do not follow directions or not even read it. Automatically, many students normally just ignore the directions and go straight to the questions of the worksheets. In most cases, I do feel like their work or tests are straight forward and do not require reading the directions to do it properly, especially in math, but that is not true for everything. There are d...

Subject Matter Chapter 6 - How to Use a Textbook

Like the texts says, I truly think its ineffective for students to read the whole textbook for class. First of all, there is not enough time for students to read all of it, and secondly, even if students read it, they probably don't understand most of it. None the less, students would not even remember the contents, so to try and get students to read the whole text is literally a waste of time, and this applies for people of all ages. With personal experience, I think it is definitely more effective and memorable if students only read the most important part of the text, and like we all probably know, most of it's content is not as important as the standards emphasize it to be.  I think vocabulary is one of the most crucial things teachers need to consider when teaching new concepts. Without really knowing what the subject matter words are, I believe we can't really move forward in our lesson because the vocab is used to comprehend the contents. Of course, we can't...

Strategy Lesson Reflection

Overall, I believe the lesson went pretty well and was clearly presented to the class. I think most people understood how to use the strategy and why it would be useful to implement in a classroom. I think both me and Gabby was well prepared with our roles that the presentation and activities was done smoothly and well organized. I particularly liked how we implemented the strategy frequently during our lesson since it exemplifies that the strategy can be used easily anytime in a class. I think the only part that I would like to redo is the activity. I think we can keep the worksheet and the topic probability, but I feel like we can present it differently. I think I stumbled when asking for the students thoughts since the students gave the answer so I think I made a very awkward transition. I believe it would have been better if I've asked "how" the students got the answer instead of just moving on. Other than that, I do feel like the lesson went well. I think there is al...

Interactive Reading Guide

https://www.amnh.org/explore/curriculum-collections/integrating-literacy-strategies-into-science-instruction/interactive-reading-guides/ This page shows a youtube video on how a teacher uses interactive reading guides in her 8th grade science class. It is a 5 minute video and she does a really good job in briefly explaining what it is, how it is used, and why it is useful students. She also provides the two worksheets she used for the assignment the students were working on in the video, so it gives a perfect example on how to use it. I think interactive readings is a great strategy to incorporate in class for students to engage in the reading and see if they understand it, and since this method gives a step-by-step instructions for students to follow, it is easy to implement in class. I think everyone should check it out and she how it is done! WORD COUNT: 136

Chapter 11: Help for Struggling Readers

Chapter 11 gave a better understanding on why all teachers should take a literacy class and should try to incorporate many strategies within the classroom to help students improve their reading skills. As the book exemplifies, reading is important in all subject matter. Whether it is to understand the lab procedures in biology class or basically comprehending the problem in math to solve word problems, they all require students to read and understand. So, although teaching reading is not the goal for all teachers, I feel like the chapter proves that it’s part of a teacher’s duty to help students improve in their skills when they struggle in reading because it is a necessary tool in all subjects. One of the key strategies listed that I personally like is to “use materials students can successfully read.” Like mentioned in the text, I think using traditional textbooks is not the best way to teach the course contents and makes the class very dull. As a fellow student and being a stude...
