Book Clubs

I actually enjoyed doing the book cubs in either this LLED class or in our EDMG class. I think book clubs really help make reading easier and motivates students to actually read because you'll need to discuss in a smaller group. If it were a book read as a whole class, remembering myself as a student, many probably wouldn't have read. The student would most likely, or at least students who were like me in high school, just winged the class discussion by hearing others comments and prayed to be either a really good guesser or hoping their are chapter summaries online if there's a test. But for book clubs, you get to choose your own book and somewhat pressures you to read because there is only about 3-5 people in the group. The good thing though is that the discussion isn't pressured. It really feels like you're just having a discussion so I definitely believe it makes the students have a much more enjoyable experience than class book discussion.
I would say though, as a future math teacher, I don't think I would do a book club for class because I don't think there is a huge range of books that would relate to the content we would learn in class, and realistically, I don't think there would be a huge time in a math class based on curriculum to actually spend a lot of time in class to do a book club on a whole book. However, I do like the ideas of maybe book clubs so I would probably do reading groups and get students to discuss about the excerpts or articles or whatever in the small reading groups before I might do a whole class discussion.
In particular with The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl, I don't think I would use it for a book to read as a whole class because I might have a hard time actually relating it to content but there are excerpts I could pull out to focus on. Also, I think its a great middle grades themed book where many discipline topics can come up and relate to the students, so I would recommend it more towards discipline and life lessons instead of content related. Overall, I do like the idea of book clubs and recommend it to any content course, but I do think it might be harder to do in a math class.

FInal Synthesis: Importance of Literacy

Going into this course, literacy was always something I expected was the responsibility of an ELA teacher. As a potential math teacher, I never thought of implementing literacy into the classroom and disregarded the importance of it. I always just thought of numbers and teaching numbers, so to be honest, I assumed this class would be somewhat pointless. However, as we went along in the course and learned the different strategies and concepts, my opinion about literacy changed and I actually think it’s extremely important for all teachers, no matter what content area the instructor is teaching, to implement literacy strategies in the classrooms. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone because the literacy strategies that we learned in the course is beneficial to both the content and enhancing reading skills. So, why not try? There are definitely some strategies I would probably never use in a math class. One particular strategy would be book clubs. I honestly think book clubs a...

TedxTalks: "I don't do Math"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y44nqo11Fh0 This video is a TedxTalks that explains the importance of STEM literacy. Emily Calandrelli defines being STEM literacy as a "way of thinking" instead of being extremely scientifically smart. For example, going to the grocery store and knowing what are GMO's or what benefits organic products have are all STEM literacy. I personally like how she suggests  that STEM literacy is a survival skill and that its important to pay attention because it affects our society and how the world is effected based on it. I think as future educators, particularly in the STEM subjects, its important to keep in mind the importance of STEM literacy and guide students in the directions of understanding STEM literacy and why it is needed in our society. Strategy Lesson Reflection

Overall, I believe the lesson went pretty well and was clearly presented to the class. I think most people understood how to use the strategy and why it would be useful to implement in a classroom. I think both me and Gabby was well prepared with our roles that the presentation and activities was done smoothly and well organized. I particularly liked how we implemented the strategy frequently during our lesson since it exemplifies that the strategy can be used easily anytime in a class. I think the only part that I would like to redo is the activity. I think we can keep the worksheet and the topic probability, but I feel like we can present it differently. I think I stumbled when asking for the students thoughts since the students gave the answer so I think I made a very awkward transition. I believe it would have been better if I've asked "how" the students got the answer instead of just moving on. Other than that, I do feel like the lesson went well. I think there is al...
